Writing about this exhibition over 2 years on (18-1-24) I’m still unable to conjure an arc that bridges these works, or clearly articulate the broader concept and feeling that led to their making.
The years that these objects emerged from were turbulent and difficult. COVID 19, the imminent retirement of my art dealer (and friend) of 18 years, mother Gail’s Cancer diagnosis, father Darryl languishing and dying in a nursing home, a romantic relationship tearing at the seems, and my relationship with my anatomy in question.
One unbroken thread that weaves in and out of these works is their maker's mind. Just prior to this exhibition I redefined my personal definition of art to be ‘the manifestation of thought in time through effort’. Each of these works are undoudtably evidence of my thoughts and my effort in the specific moment that they were conceived. Maybe distance will provide more answers, or maybe these objects will forever evade capture, together forming and re-forming into an ever shifting wonky and imperfect Queer rainbow?
